General Union of Palestinian Women

Activities

1- Ensuring the participation of women in the national struggle through the organization of demonstrations and sit-ins against Israeli arbitrary measures - in solidarity with the Palestinian people in the Occupied Territories and detainees in Israeli jails.

2- The establishment of the Children's Home of Steadfastness (Beit Al-Sumud) for children who suffered the loss of both parents in the Tal-Al-Zaatar massacre in 1976 and/or have been victims of the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982.

3- The establishment of vocational training centers in sewing, embroidery and typing , to provide young women with basic educational skills, and facilitate their acquisition of jobs and hence, their participation in the development of their local community.

4- GUPW is also responsible for establishing nurseries and Kindergartens in Palestinian refugee camps, both inside and outside occupied Palestine.  These services have helped to guarantee the proper health and educational care of children, and to alleviate the burden of childcare for working women.

5- The organization of seminars in:

a: Preventative Medicine.
b: First Aid and Nursing.
c: Educational and Cultural Activities.
d: Civil Defense Training.

6- Exhibitions of Palestinian Culture and Folklore.

7- GUPW has organized, where possible, literacy campaigns, to enrich women's awareness in their political and social role.

Since its establishment, GUPW has contributed to the promotion of women's status and role in the Palestinian people's struggle for liberation.

A higher level of awareness of women's roles has, in turn, contributed to  increased representation in the decision-making bodies of the Palestinian Liberation Organization and the Palestinian Authority.

Palestinian Women’s efforts to achieve equality and social justice are still hampered by Israeli occupation  and oppressive practices against the population at large.

Palestinian self-determination and the establishment of an independent democratic state on national soil are necessary prerequisites for the full empowerment, development and advancement of Palestinian women.
